Pencil / graphite, gold leaf, colored pencil, gouache and embroidery floss on Evanston municipal ledger, Image: 18”h x 12”w, framed: 25"h x 19"w, Item No. 19282,
This is from a recent iteration from my “…Of White Bread and Miracles” series that appropriates imagery from “Your New Hobby, Indian Dancing and Costumes” published for the Boy Scouts of America.
I am relating these recent works to the Ghost Dance ceremony to show the complete disregard for Native people as human beings and the centering of white supremacy. The ghost dance regalia imagery behind the figures is not directly copied but inspired so as not to dilute its power. They also act as shields while 3 dimensional elements (tassels, fringe) imply the sense of movement and the consequent restriction and denial of that movement.
