Done in 2020, this painting of a Northern Pueblo Koshare is Cajero's third realism painting after a 30-year hiatus from the medium. From Cajero: "Having created so many clay Koshares over the years, creating this painting was a very enjoyable experience. I placed what I see as a "Spirit Butterfly" on the cornhusk in front of him. From what I understand, butterflies are a part of the Koshare's initiation process and are their Spiritual Companions throughout their lives as a Koshare. Their prayers and medicine promote pollination and procreation. In the villages, they can be funny and warm-hearted while taking care of the serious business of sacred ceremonies. In the background, I added three steps to the top of a building which is a stable indication of a sacred Kiva."
