Les Namingha

Cuts

Natural clay and acrylic paint, 15"h x 8 1/4"w x 10 1/4"d, Item No. 11938,

This large torso shaped vessel was created using both the slab and coil sculpting process. As though preparing a canvas, Namingha prepared the clay in a raw state and applied his imaginative and detailed depictions. Slits, or cuts, expose the underbelly of another layer, or life within the skin of this pot, thus lending to itself a spatial quality beyond that of a hollow space. Representative of his desire to explore the subconscious, Namingha breaks up the tight and detailed surface of the mosaic. Metallic paint gives the bold form further movement where small detailed motifs and looping patterns, taken from traditional designs, hearken the past and re-define it in a contemporary manner.
