Straddling the line between abstract expressionism and western pop, Richardson’s work finds footing in a unique place between conceptualism and pure emotion. With identifying human truths as perhaps the only tenuous ligament connecting his past life in advertising and ranching, his work aims to distill life’s complexities into base analogies.
Playing with scale has become an overarching act in his work as it relates to the vastness of the West as well as the screening of peripheral elements thus leaving the viewer with a clear focal point. Richardson has found the West to be a productive well that he draws observations from. He attributes this to the West’s simultaneous simplicity and immense depth.
His work plays out on rich color fields where detail and obscurity push and pull. Often the titles of his pieces are the most literal element, helping to give context or lay breadcrumbs for further thought.
